Monday
American Museum of Natural History
We started Monday morning with a classroom session on the AMNH. The speaker gave us an overview of the museum and somewhat of a critique of the holdings. From there we headed to the museum. An overview tour had been planned on our arrival and we headed to the 4th floor to see the dinosaurs after a short introduction in the main lobby. I did have to take a shot straight up while sitting under a replica but pictures will come later.
Unfortunately our groups were large enough and the museum busy enough I did not feel the guided tour beneficial. We also went by the blue whale, Galapagos tortoise, and the Asian animals. What was very good were the special exhibits we had tickets for. We went to the show at the Hayden Planetarium Space Theater. It was when Cosmic Collisions and was most impressive. The graphics and theories on the creation and distribution of matter was riveting. I was very sorry when the show was over.
Water: H2O=Life was another special show which was excellent. Illustrations of how little of the water on earth is usable and that agriculture takes 70% of that was eye opening. They had a narrated show on a turning globe to demonstrate the forces of water and then several smaller films and exhibits on our use and misuse of water.
After the two shows I spent time in Asian mammals. 4 hours--our basic window just was not adequate time to see the museum at all. I guess what it did was just stimulate my interest to go back another time. The museum has so many holdings it is just overwhelming. I didn't have time to look outside at all. I probably also only saw about 2-3% of the exhibits. Mind-boggling when you think about how little I was.
We took the subway back to the hotel and after dinner the Staten Island ferry ride was on the agenda. It was a beautiful, although very cool evening. I did not bring my camera this trip and was sorry I didn't as the sun setting was beautiful. It has been a few trips since I had seen it in daylight and darkness the same trip.
A very busy, full day. Folks were tired by the time we were home. I think less than half of the participants went on the Staten Island ride with us.
As we sat in the lobby on the first tour I took this shot looking straight up above me. A model of a dinosaur
In the dinosaur hall this was one of the skeleton's that has been preserved and on display
One of the exhibits in African exhibit
And I loved the baby ostrich and eggs.
And finally the entrance into the water exhibit.--just some kids that were ahead of me.
