I'll try not to be very spoilerish but I can't guarantee a spoiler-free opinion.
Well, more than women's stories, what drew me into this HBO Mexican production of women in prison is how the story(ies) of captive women who love women
is/are told. Since you may all already know my flirt with shallowness, it's needless to say I find one woman in particular quite alluring, and this
character called Bambi, who I predict will end quite tragically, is wonderfully played by an actress called Cecilia Suarez, nice to meet you, Cecilia. Bambi is
the kind of character who could literally rip your heart out but metaphorically can do that just as well. Her "love" (obsession) for a character
called Consuelo, or rather as she's usually called, "La Colombiana" seems to be genuine and her most visible vulnerability so far. La
Colombiana's story isn't any less complex. We learn she has always survived by being available to people and they desire her. A fate she inherited very
young and that she tries to use to her favor as any survivor would. If I can envision a final bloodbath where one inmate could survive, I'd bet my chips on
her. The other characters so far haven't (and maybe won't) interest me very much but there's a little of every prision drama ever made: injustice,
abandon and deceit with a splash of good old capitalistic greed since Capadocia is supposed to be a "model" prision where women will be explored, I
mean work as they get ready for re-socialization. As far as I'm concerned, that's a nice series to watch or half-watch if you, like me, hate
violent scenes. At least till Bambi is alive and killing, oops kicking.
