A guide to Hockey Day in Canada

Hockey fans across the country unite for this special day featuring our national sport. With the whirlwind of broadcasts and presentations, here's a breakdown of what's going on.
The scarcely-populated city of Nelson, B.C. will hit tourism records this weekend as it plays host to CBCs 7th annual Hockey Day in Canada. Volunteerism is the theme of this years 13.5-hour broadcast, as CBC on-air talent pay homage to the countless volunteers across the country; from the people who make hot chocolate at local arenas to the coaches who teach hockey at the minor levels.
The chaos kicks off at noon ET, and includes specials, documentaries, and naturally, the three big ticket games. With the flurry of activity about to ensue, one can only hope for time to grab a pack of beer before trying to decode who's doing what. Heres a quick guide to the day's events:
Triple-header:
- Montreal Canadiens at Ottawa Senators (2 p.m. ET),
- Vancouver Canucks at Toronto Maple Leafs (7 p.m. ET)
- Edmonton Oilers a Calgary Flames (10 p.m., ET).
Live locations:
Nelson, B.C.: Ron MacLean, Don Cherry, Cassie Campbell, Scott Morrison and @#%$ Irvin explore hockeys history in this host city, including a look back at the Patrick family - the legendary figures responsible for many of hockeys past and present rules and foundations.
Camrose, Alta.: Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudy will kick off the 100th anniversary of hockey in Alberta, update the Provincial Junior A match-up between the Camrose Kodiacs and Brooks Bandits, and host an after-hours special.
Regina, Sask.: Glenn Reid will be live at Sherwood Ice Sports Arena, where their first female under-18 high performance tournament will take place.
Toronto: Scott Russell visits St. Michaels College to celebrate their 100th hockey anniversary with an alumni game and plaque dedication.
Tignish, P.E.I.: Bruce Rainnie broadcasts minor hockey from the newly-built Tignish Arena, which is fully owned and operated by local volunteers.
Other specials:
- "The Boy Behind the Mask" Diana Swain travels to Moncton N.B., where an autistic boy's life was turned around when his parents discovered his inner goaltender.
- "Carrying On" Mellissa Fung unravels the heartache and battles of one minor league coach who fought his way back behind the bench after a devastating car crash.
- "The Other Nelson" Scott Oake remembers "Nelson," a legendary arena caretaker from Birtle, Man.
