Oh how sweet it is to have Maca and Esther back! Maca, to give us all a glimpse into the heart of a sensitive and resolute woman stressed by family life, and
the hullaballoo which is one emergency room in Madrid, but unlikely to be tortured by the make-up department at HC. And Esther, equally sensitive, albeit at
times a tad naive, and alas betrayed by her forays into compassion until she is drawn out on a limb--ledge--and all too ecstatically tormented by the strangely
sadistic band of make-up artists dispatched to her care.
Ah well, it takes all kinds of make-up artists to make a TV world!
And BTW, Nissocali are you anywhere near us, the Spanish-language impaired denizens of IBD?

Well, how about "What to do until the doctor comes?" While most of us are interested in Hospital Central not for its hospital functions, but for its
'romance between Maca and Esther' functions, perhaps a little information about body parts and conditions might sharpen-up our hearing, and make us
feel less language-challenged! Most of the following terminology is useful in association with the last episode, with some applicability to Esther's
injuries. Anyway, I hope it will be helpful!
Body Parts___________Partes del Cuerpo
head ......................................... la cabeza
brain ......................................... el cerebro, los sesos
face .......................................... la cara
scalp ........................................ el cuero, el cabelludo
hair .......................................... el pelo
skin ......................................... la piel
nerve ....................................... el nervio
bone ........................................ el hueso
joint ......................................... el articulacion
forehead .................................. la frente
temple ..................................... la sien
eyes ........................................ los ojos
nose ....................................... la nariz
mouth .................................... la boca
lips ......................................... los labios
shoulder ................................. el hombro
arm ........................................ el brazo
forearm .................................. el antebrazo
hand ...................................... la mano
fist ......................................... el puno (in honor of Maca's fighting spirit!)
side ....................................... el costado, el lado
chest, bosom ......................... el pecho
rib ......................................... la costilla
heart ..................................... el corazon
artery .................................... la arteria
vein ....................................... la vena
blood-vessel ........................... el vaso sanguineo
stomach ................................ el estomago
abdomen ............................... el abdomen
back ...................................... la espalda
leg ........................................ la pierna
Body Fluids____________Los Fluidos del Cuerpo
(I don't know about you, but I ain't staying in this
section too long!LOL)
blood ...................la sangre
bloodstream ....... la corriente sanguinea
tears .................. las lagrimas
saliva ................. la saliva
------------That's it!
Conditions________________Condiciones
headache ................... el dolor de la cabeza
concussion.................. la conmocion cerebral
ache, pain .................. el dolor
throbbing pain ............ el dolor pungente
bruise ........................ el moreton, el cardenal
bleeding ..................... la sangria
bloody ........................ ensangrentado/a
injury ........................ la herida, la lesion
broken bone .............. el hueso roto
fever ......................... la fiebre calentura
heart-attack .............. la ataque cardiaco
illness ....................... la enfermedad
These terms are in the masculine as received, because
I dare not run the risk of trying to make them feminine!
He is still alive ................... El esta con vida
He is conscious ................. Tiene conocimiento, Esta consciente.
He is unconscious ............. Esta sin sentido. Esta desmayado.
|
|||
BCNgal |
|||
|
Alright let me add/correct a couple of things
sangria is an alcoholic beverage which main ingredient is red wine So it'd be: bleeding = la hemorragia fever ......................... la fiebre Nobody uses calentura for a fever. Calentura is a sore you get on your lips because of high fever. heart-attack .............. la ataque cardiaco, el ataque al corazón The second one is more common He is unconscious ............. Esta sin sentido. Esta desmayado. Esta inconsciente Desmayado is used more for someone who fainted, is more specific. Inconsciente is the PC term |

Laura, who wouldn't want to get the language right? There is no such thing as "butting-in" to this Spanish-langage- impaired forum when
you're trying to be helpful and offer a corrective to the topic at hand. I'm grateful that you make corrections or we'd all have a rough night out
at the local restaurant staring warily at the Sangria pitcher! It's just been a case of "attitude" meet "thin skin." My solution,
Peace! Shake? What's that in Spanish?*grin*

Until our official scribe arrives I will continue to make efforts on behalf of the Spanish-impaired tongue, unless otherwise forbidden by an unforgivable
tendency to pig-latin out of the mother tongue of Espana!
For some time now I have been deluded into thinking I understand what is being said by the denizens of Hospital Central. Lo and behold, I am not a savant,
but a listener to COGNATES! According to my inadequate widget dictionary a cognate is a word "having the same linguistic derivation as another; from
the same original word or root." Or as Margaret Williams tells us it's "a word that can be found in two different languages with similar. .
. spelling and the same meaning. In fact, so that we can become confused right at the start, some words that are spelled the same in different
languages do not have the same meaning at all. She calls them False Cognates. Just jump right on in here at any time, BCNgal--the
water's roiled!
BTW, I don't have to say I'm not smart, or a teacher or anything, right? I'm just another Maca/Esther fan who needs relief from watching crying
Spaniards without a clue as to what they are saying or moaning, but who nevertheless suffers right along with them!
PS: Sorry I don't know how to line these up in neat columns. Any help with the layout, or content, or any corrections would be greatly appreciated.

All,
I'm busy writing a book. Unfortunately, I won't have the luxury of long weekends of transcribing this great season. Anyway, this one scene was too good not to transcribe. It kept flashing in my head so I just decided to write it down. If I get a break, I'll do more. Meanwhile, thank goodness for Rachel42 and all the other great translators. THANK YOU. Esther is at the cemetery, watching at a distance as Bea's family stands before the priest at Bea's gravesite. With arms crossed as if holding herself, Esther quietly bows her head. Maca is driving her car slowly, looking past the grave markers as she scans the cemetery for Esther. Esther looks up, her brow furrowed and face bruised, watching as the priest and family walk away from Bea's gravesite in Esther's direction. Maca sees Esther and parks her car at a respectful distance away from where Esther is standing and from where Bea's family is standing. Maca lowers the window so she can watch and hear what is happening without obstruction. The service is over and the family and priest leave Bea's gravesite. Esther takes a deep breath as Bea's family walks toward her. Seeing Esther shift her weight, Maca realizes that Esther is preparing to make some kind of move. Without losing sight of Esther, Maca unclips her safety belt. As the family walks away from the grave and in the direction where Esther has been standing, Bea's husband Luis sees Esther. He takes off his sunglasses as if wanting to see if that is really Esther that has the temerity to show up at Bea's funeral. Esther decides to make her move and brushes past one of the mourners to stop directly in front of Luis. Luis: What are you doing here? Esther: (with sadness in her voice) I'm very sorry Luis. An angry Luis squares his stance as he leans forward. Luis: You are sorry? You destroyed my family. You left my son without a mother. And all that you can say is that you are sorry? Esther has a sorry, pitiful look on her face as she stares up at Luis. He reaches out to grab her arms to shake Esther as he continues to decry her apology. Luis: I don't want to ever see you again. I never want you near my son or my wife's grave. When Maca sees Luis physically shaking Esther, she jumps out of the car. Maca: Hey! A crying and pleading Esther wails to Luis. Esther: I loved her too! Gripping Esther's arms tightly, Luis visibly shakes Esther as he shouts at her. Luis: You loved her? You have no idea what that means. Luis continues to rattle Esther as he takes a step forward, snarling at Esther as he leans into her. An enraged Luis is unaware of Maca's shouts to leave Esther alone. Running at full speed, Maca propels herself between Luis and Esther, forcing Luis back with a straight armed push. Maca: Hey, leave her alone. Let her go, d#*@ it! Luis does not release his grip nor move back from his close stance on Esther. With determined fury, Maca forces Luis away, physically pushing him again and again until he staggers back away from them. Breathing heavily from the confrontation, Maca and Luis glare at each other. His companions quickly rush in to squire him away from the melee as Maca stands square in her stance, ready to pounce again if needed, to protect Esther. A scared and frightened Esther remains rooted in place. Maca does not relinquish her territorial dominion until she is assured that Luis has been led away. With a warrior's stance, Maca turns to Esther. Seeing Esther's vulnerability, Maca walks with a deliberate gait as she switches from protector to comforting partner. Drawing down from her full height, Maca bends to calmly look at Esther. Maca reaches out to gently caress an apparently frightened Esther. Maca: Are you ok? Esther: Yes. With a sense of distaste at the scene that has just transpired, Maca pulls Esther away. Maca: Let's go. Before fully giving Esther all of her attention, a wary Maca turns to make sure that Luis is being detained and is no longer a physical threat at the moment. +++++ Maca and Esther are sitting on a bench at the cemetery, near Maca's car. They are both seated on the bench but are not directly next to one another. Maca is leaning forward when Esther turns to her. Esther: You can say it. Maca: Say what? Esther: You told me that it was not a good idea for me to come here. Maca does not reply, instead she just looks away. Esther: (with a slightly aggrieved tone) I had to come, I owed her. Maca: (firmly): No, you don't owe Bea anything. Esther: Maca don't say that. You don't want to tell me what the h*#@ happened. But I know that it was my fault that Bea died. Maca wanting to end this conversation, stands up. Maca: Stop talking nonsense, and let's drop the topic of Bea. Especially… Maca strides toward the car, with Esther trailing behind her. Esther: Especially, because? Maca: Nothing. Esther: Maca, what the H#@# are you hiding? Maca walks around to open the passenger door for Esther. Maca: Enough Esther. Ok, enough. Maca wants Esther to climb in the car and return to the hospital, but Esther is unable to leave the topic of Bea's death. Esther: Don't be unfair to her. She's dead Maca. Maca: Ok. Are we going to the hospital? A petulant Esther takes her place in the passenger seat. Maca stares at her, realizing that Esther is oblivious to what really happened with Bea. With a weariness to the situation, Maca walks around the car to the driver's side. |

Hola, dear Nissocali! Writing a book? Who better--even in this short scene you again show your thoroughness and sensitivity to detail. Thank you again for
alleviating some of our angst! I will not do you the dubious favor of critiquing the wonderful gift you've given us here, but just as I was beginning to
get vertigo from my avatar, you have made it come alive again for me emotionally!
Buena suerte con su libro, and with your writing generally!

Thanks, Nisso, you had to remind us of what we are missing. LOL. It continues to fascinate me how Maca turns into Wonder Maca. Anyway, good luck with the book.
